NB Mat Registry Learning Modules
Three learning modules (along with a bibliography) were developed:
The first two of these learning modules focus on the heritage of rug hooking in New Brunswick and complement the New Brunswick social studies curriculum. The third focuses on “How-to” hook a mat, and is intended to provide beginners with easy instruction.
The two modules that were designed to complement the New Brunswick social studies curriculum were tested out in a grade 9 classroom in St Stephen on April 7, 2017. Students (n=16) were asked to complete an exit survey upon completion of the activities :
- 50% expressed a sense of inclusion and pride;
- 81% expressed a sense of respect for developing their craft skills;
- 94% acquired a new cultural understanding of the importance of the rug hooking tradition in New Brunswick;
- 56% expressed a sense of being part of a rich heritage.
