| Biography: | Nina Annette Killam Shaffer was born to George Mason Killam, a farmer, and Annie Blakeney. She married Herbert Seymour Shaffer on September 18, 1912 and had at least two children, Edward Davis born in 1913 and Frank Herbert born in 1918. She was Baptist and belonged to various women's groups. The current owner of the mat remembers, when they were six years old, their grandfather being killed and Nina coming to live with them. Herbert was killed May 16, 1954, when a tractor rolled over on him, breaking his ribs. She passed way nine months later of a broken heart. All the Killam sisters hooked and placed the mats at the front door or beside the bed. |
