Biography:Mary Street Leighton Williamson's parents were John S. Leighton and Lidia (sic) M. Street. Her father was a clerk. She attended Horton Academy in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. On September 22, 1934, she married Robert Gordon Williamson who was born in St. Andrews and worked for the CPR. They were married in the Fisher Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, NB. Due to her husband’s employment, the family moved many times to places including West Saint John, Montreal, Buffalo New York, and Long Island New York. Mary was employed as a nurse during the Second World War in the Veterans Hospital in Montreal. The couple had two children; Peter and John. Mary was very involved in her community, joining the I.O.D.E. in Saint John and Woodstock and the Volunteer Aid Detachment in Montreal. She loved opera which she often listened to on the radio, she also loved the arts, classical music and decorating. She enjoyed reading and worked at the Quincy Library in Massachusetts and volunteered at the Saint Andrews Library. She loved to golf while living in Saint Andrews. She taught herself hooking in the late 1950s and used a wooden frame and a smaller round frame. She drew her own designs on paper and then transferred them to the burlap.
