Biography:Isobel Gatherer McCurdy Baird's ancestors were Scottish. Ulster Scots who arrived in the Halifax, NS, area between 1750 and 1850 from Ireland and Scotland. She attended Dalhousie University and graduated with a BA in music in 1919. She was there during the Halifax explosion. She courted her first husband while in university. She married Dr. K. A. Baird, a medical doctor, on September 10, 1919 and moved to China in May 1921 with her husband to work as missionaries. They fled China in 1926 and moved to Canning, Nova Scotia, in 1927 and then to Saint John, NB, before 1932. During the years that she hooked, she lived at 287 King Street West, Saint John, NB. After the war she lived at 562 Dunn Avenue, Saint John, NB. She raised six children. The eldest child was David, then Gordon, McClure, Donal, Rosemary and finally Audrey. Isobel was a classically trained pianist, having received her Bachelor of Music at Dalhousie University in 1919. She played piano and organ in many churches, belonged to many university groups, as well as the Saint John Art Club. She began to hook rugs in the 1930s. She hooked as a creative outlet. Her mats were given to family members.
