Erna was raised by her grandmother, her mother died when she was 2 months hold. It is assumed that her grandmother taught her this craft. She would have been 19 at the date printed on the rug. She died at the age of 91. At this time she was taught all the quilting, embroidery, etc. so she could make a living, which came in handy. Eunice took care of Erna for 17 years until her death. Erna was handicapped with locked hips, making it nearly impossible for Erna to bend her hips. Erna left all her belongings to Eunice at the time of her death. Eunice had help cleaning out Erna's house, which was where the mat was recovered and gifted to the museum. Eunice was a friend to Erna during this time. |
