Biography:Clara May Proctor Buchanon was of Irish descent and brought up on a farm. She was a homemaker who worked at cleaning houses and at auctions. She started rug hooking at age eleven with her grandmother and mother. She was the matriarch of the “Sussex Tea Room Hookers. She enjoyed many other activities, such as Women's Auxiliary, St. Mark's guild, Fifty Plus Club and Happy-go-Lucky Fiddlers, to name a few. She wrote a book in 2000 “Hooked on Rag Hooking. Her rugs often featured pigs and fiddles. She hooked for pleasure and income. Each year she hooked a mat for the Pork Conference. She would demonstrate rug hooking at schools and fairs to encourage others to hook. She was well known for her use of crimpoline as her fabric of choice for hooking. Family, friends and local second hand stores would collect and save the fabric for her.
