Biography:Annie Elizabeth Haines Morrell was the daughter of John Haines and Jane (Clara) Haines. She moved to the Miramichi at the age of nine. In 1885, she married master builder Walter Morell (he died in 1933). They raised seven surviving children. One son, Walter, was killed in the First World War. Annie often laid a wreath at the cenotaph on Rememberance Day as a Silver Cross Mother. She was a member of the Anglican Church Women, Red Cross Life Member, and charter member of the Ladies' Auxiliary Legion. She was a quilter, hooker, and avid gardener. She knit socks and mittens for her twenty grandchildren every year for Christmas. The current mat owner remembers her reading him bedtime stories from Burgess Bedtime Stories. He remembers her picking blueberries with a can around her neck so she could pick with both hands. She lived with the current mat owner’s family one winter in her nineties. She planted a garden a month before she died, poking holes in the ground for her bulbs with her cane.
